How many times a day do you search the internet for something? Five? Ten? More? Wouldn’t it be great if you could do something good with that tiny piece of your day? Enter Ecosia – the search engine that plants trees every time you search.
What is Ecosia?
Ecosia is a search engine with a difference: every time you search, you help plant trees around the globe. In fact, they plant so many trees that they are a carbon-negative search engine!
How does Ecosia plant trees?
Ecosia uses their advertising revenue to plant trees in projects around the globe. It takes around 45 searches to generate enough to plant a tree – easily done in a week’s work and play. When I started using Ecosia in 2017, there were just a couple of tree planting projects. Fast forward to 2020 and they have twenty projects, including one in Spain!
How does Ecosia compare to Google?
One of my major worries when thinking about switching to the Ecosia search engine was whether or not I’d get the same quality of search results as I got from Google. I needn’t have worried – to date, I haven’t been able to spot much difference at all! I still get great quality search results and I know that I am helping impoverished communities and helping to stop climate change in the process.
So – is Ecosia worth it?
When I started to use it, I thought it was difficult to use as much as I would have liked. I thought that I would have to go to the Ecosia website every time I wanted to search rather than simply opening an app or typing in the search bar on the browser. It turns out I don’t have to worry about that. I was able to change my browser’s default search engine to Ecosia. The Ecosia mobile app has widgets you can add to the home screen and even a search bar that sits in the notification bar. There are tutorials on the website but you have to search for them.
How many trees have I “planted” so far? I’ve been using it regularly for the last three years, but when you clear your browsing data your tree count gets lost. I’ve helped to plant an estimated 2,000 trees in that time, by using Ecosia on my desktop and my mobile.
What I love: I love that making such a simple tweak to my daily routine is literally helping save to world. I also love that Ecosia stays accountable to its users: they publish monthly income reports so you know how much they are spending on trees and how much they are spending on running costs.
What I don’t love: You do have to search within the website for tutorials on how to set it up everythwere you need it. That information should be front and centre! Luckily, I’ve now written a blog post giving you all the information you need – make Ecosia your default search engine everywhere!
Using the Ecosia search engine is such an easy way to fight climate change that it would be daft not to. Yes, you will need to take some time to switch it to default across your devices, but that will only take a few minutes. This one, small change could have a lasting impact on the world around you. Do it.
