The zombies are coming – how do you survive?
You wake up, feeling knackered after an awful night’s sleep. It sounded like your neighbours were arguing in the street, and somewhere in the distance some idiot had left their car alarm going off for hours. You check your phone before getting out of bed, and… zombies.
Your signal is long gone, as is the power, but your friends and family managed to get the message to you before the power died. Do you bunker down or try your luck? What do you do next? How on earth are you going to survive this? Luckily, you read this blog post and prepared. It’s the dawn of a scary new world. Here’s what you’ll need to survive.
The Green Skills You’ll Definitely Need In The Event Of A Zombie Apocalypse
Foraging. After you’ve survived the initial zombie onslaught, you’ll need sustenance. If The Walking Dead is anything to go by, there’ll be plenty of food left in people’s houses. That said, the more you can forage in the early days, the longer the tins and cans are going to last.
Growing your own. When the dust has settled and you have your safe haven, growing your own food will be a priority for yourself and your group. What you grow will vary depending on where you are and will almost definitely change in the event of a zombie apocalypse, but it won’t hurt to get the basics down now.
Repurposing. In a zombie apocalypse, all rules are off. You can’t just go to the shops to get what you need, they’ll be looted by now and probably full of walkers. You need to get creative and start thinking outside the box. Use wooden furniture to fortify your base. Turn plastic waste into bricks.
Sewing. While we’re on the subject of repurposing, sewing is one of the best things you could learn to do. Clothes may not be high on your priority list when you’re fleeing your zombie-ridden neighbourhood, and in any case the ones you are wearing might wear out quite quickly. Learning to sew means keeping clothes on your back for longer.
Generating energy and heat without relying on fossil fuels. Once the apocalypse takes hold, it won’t be long until the gas stops flowing and the power grid dies. What do you do without that? Yes, you could keep your fingers crossed to find a safe place with solar panels and battery storage (one of my dream house goals) but you won’t necessarily find one. The answer for most will be people power and being able to conserve the heat and energy you do have.
Travelling by foot. You’re not going to be able to rely on cars. What it hits the fan, the roads will be blocked and petrol fuel is a very finite resource. Cycling, if you can find a bike, is fast, but leaves you unprotected and without the use of your hands. Best get used to walking, with a spot of running for when a quick getaway is needed.
