Join Sid the Madeiran Wall Lizard and his friends in the sunshine!
“Meet Sid. Sid is a little lizard who lives on the beautiful island of Madeira, where the sun shines very hot. Too hot sadly – because poor Sid has a problem keeping his feet cool. With the help of his friends Steph and Bert, and a very special, very tiny mouse named Pete – not forgetting the frog friends too! – Sid tries to solve the problem, finally keeping his feet cool in a very unusual way.”
Sid the Madeiran Wall Lizard by Heather Heath Gorton
Sid the Madeiran Wall Lizard has a problem. The scorching summer sun is so hot that he struggles to cool down his feet. Let’s just say that, at the time of writing this review, I can relate! Is anyone else actually managing to cope in this heat?
What we loved about this book was that when Sid had a problem, his friends came round to give him advice. The descriptive language of the book paints a very good picture, and the focus on words like “WOW” is great for very young readers.
We had fun with this book. Sid the Madeiran Wall Lizard is an interesting, but easy-going read. There’s a lot of opportunity to muck around with character voices and put your own spin on things. Sid’s observations of the tourists in the book made me chuckle!
I loved helping the children look for Pete the very helpful mouse in the pictures. Pete was inspired by Heather’s late husband and in the book takes the form of a mouse who keeps everyone safe.
The takeaway? This is a lovely, chilled-out book for anyone with children aged 7 or under. It’s easy to have fun with this book. You’ll love the descriptions of what’s going on around Sid, the illustrations and the message of friendship and kindness.
